Building a Bespoke Log Store

I had a phone call the other day from a customer who loved our 4ft High Wootton log store but had the small issue that where they wanted to locate it was only 3ft wide. Assuring the customer that this was not an issue, given a little time and a cup of tea, the workshop could easily alter the log store to this bespoke size for her garden.

This isn't the first time that Dorset Log Stores have altered a log store to suit a customers wishes, who needed it to fit into a particularly small space, or had dreamt of something larger than our normal sizes. Everything that Dorset Log Stores produces, be it log store, garden store or wheelie bin and recycling store, are all made right here by our own local craftsmen. Due to this, creating bespoke log stores is a simple process, as we can start from the very first cut in the very first board, to make sure that it is completely correct to the customers desires. 

In this weeks Dorset Log Stores Blog, I thought that I would share some photos of the bespoke log stores that we have done over the last month, from the tall and thin, to wide and high.

This is a 3ft wide Okeford Log Store with a timber roof, scaled down in size from the standard 4ft option to fit into a particularly tight space. While being 3ft wide, it is still just other 6ft in height and will hold plenty of logs for those cold winter nights. 

Shown above is a 6ft wide Melbury Log Store. While not a custom size, a central partition was requested creating two 3ft sections with a shelf on one side for kindling. What I particularly like about this one, is the two arches, giving the front of the log store a graceful curve.

In this photo is a custom sized 9ft wide Okeford Log Store with a tiled roof. The central partition allows the splitting of seasoned and new logs so your fire burns dry logs for maximum warmth. The lovely arch frames of the roof bar and the slate effect tiled roof, will really make this log store a central feature in the garden.

What Do Recycling Symbols Mean?

In the seminal work Understanding Comic Books (Yes I'm a big nerd but stick with me, I'm going somewhere with this) the author puts all art and pictures on a scale, from the greatest work of art, The Mona Lisa at one end to the symbol for ladies toilets at the other end.

The Mona Lisa's smile captivates at one end of the scale, but who is she? Why is she smiling? Beautiful though she is there is something she cannot do, and that is provide you with any information at all. The little matchstick figure of a lady on the toilet door, plain as she is, does exactly that.

Unfortunately in our modern world of recycling there are plenty of symbols, for this that and the other, that are not always completely clear as to what they mean. So this week's blog is all about what all those different symbols on the side of packaging actually mean?

The Mobius Loop is probably the most famous recycling symbol, gracing everything from bins to drinks bottles. As a symbol it indicates that the object is capable of being recycled, not that it has been. Occasionally it can be seen with a %, usually done to indicate how much of the packaging uses an already recycled material.

The Tidyman is put on packaging that should be disposed of in a bin, This isn't particularly related to recycling but rather as part of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign serves as a reminder not to litter.

The Green Dot does not mean that the packaging is recyclable, has been recycled or will be recycled in the future. The Green Dot is actually a symbol used to indicate that the producer has joined the Green Dot Scheme, a European scheme where businesses make financial contributions towards recycling.

Plastics identifies the type of plastic resin used to make the item by the number contained within the mobius loop. Plastic is beginning to be recyclable more and more, with most homes now able to put more plastic packaging into their recycling bin.

Glass that can be disposed in bottle banks or personal household recycling bins. Make sure you wash out the inside first mind.

Aluminium that can be recycled, at a local recycling point or in a household recycling bin.

The Paper symbol is only awarded by the National Association of Paper Merchants to paper or board that has a minimum of 50%, 75% or is 100% genuine waste paper or board fibre.

The Wood symbol is awarded by the Forestry Stewardship Council, identifying products which contain woods from well managed forests certified as being in agreement with the rules of the FSC.

These days most of us have several bins for all the different items we need to recycle and I'm sure like me you've spent 10 minutes digging through the paper bin for that glass jar you think you accidentally put in there. What we need are some bright coloured labels to help us out. The Largest Log Store We've Ever Made!!!

Around a month ago some customers came to visit the Dorset Log Stores and after having a look around, mulling things over, they approached Phill (the boss around these parts) with a special commission. The largest log store that we have ever built.

I have in the past been known to drift towards hyperbole and give the truth a general scope for added storytelling. That being said this really was a humongous log store. Based around our popular Okeford Log Store but super sized this behemoth measured 6ft high on its eaves, to avoid banged heads, up to 8ft high at the back. Large enough for several small trees, let alone logs. 9ft wide along its frontage, this was divided into two, a 2ft wide shelved cupboard and the remaining 7ft for logs.

Never one to be daunted by a task, the DLS workshop team set to with a flurry of sawdust and a whirring of screwdrivers. Slowly but surely the log store took shape. Once constructed we placed it outside and took some photos for scale. We tried several different things to give it an idea of scale, firstly the Boss, Phill. Then the Little Okeford Store. Finally just to show the size of it eight of our chaps got inside, to show the size. This is no small store.

The final challenge was delivery. Having partly dismantled it for easier handling, the log store headed off to its new home. All our log stores are made here at Dorset Log Stores, by Dorset craftsmen and only using the finest timber sourced by ourselves. Due to this we are able to offer a wide variety (to our log stores). For example cupboards for your accessories or shelves for your kindling. We are also able to take on these bespoke log stores as well. At the other end of the scale we made a custom log store last week that was shorter in depth to accommodate the customers limited garden space.

Dorset Log Stores Wheelie Bins and Recycling Stores

About a year ago I received a letter in the post from the Dorset Waste Partnership. If I'm being honest, I skimmed the contents. Something about bins, removing lids from glass jars and the year 2014. I love recycling, so the fact that I did skim the letter, I do find a little embarrassing.

7 AM, a Monday morning, a year later. My beloved trusty bin which I so carefully painted a number 12 on so all knew it was mine, has gone to be replaced by a behemoth black wheelie bin, a box for for food waste, paper recycling bag and a box for cans and bottles.

Luckily, the Boss Phill reads his mail and so was fully prepared for this bin switch over, with the Dorset Log Store Wheelie Bin & Recycling Store, the ideal place to hide-away those unsightly plastic bins that we know all have to find a place for. Designed to contain either the 140L or 240L wheelie bins, the stores are made from thick pressure treated Scandinavian redwood timber, guaranteed against rot and fungus for 15 years with no extra treatment.

The boss Phill even added in a clever lid lifting system, using clips, so that when you lift the timber lid of the store, the lid of the wheelie bin lifts up too.

The Dorset Log Stores Wheelie Bins and Recycling Stores can be sent partially assembled on a pallet and once in place and secured together are a sturdy and strong hide for your plastic bins. My personal favourite however are the lovely little signs by Angelic Hen to remind you when to put the recycling and the bins out. Ideal if you're always forgetting and having to rush to put the bins out the front as you hear the bin lorry coming down the road. It happens to me more often than I'd care to admit.

Delivering a Dorset Log Store

The Royal Mail delivered its first letter in the year 1516 and since then letters and parcels have been zipping their way around the country from sender to recipient. Whilst we did once put a 1st class stamp on a High Wootton Log Store and leave it for the post-lady to collect, her emphatic "NO" led to us using different methods for sending our timber log stores all over the country.

Firstly, we offer FREE DELIVERY throughout much of the UK. For some islands and distant locations extra charges unfortunately do apply. Depending on the size and model of your log store we have a few different options on how to get it to you.

For our smaller garden stores and log stores we use a courier service, sending the items to you flat-packed. But don't worry, no carpentry is required and all the necessary screws and build instructions are inside. The delivery is made on the day of your choosing, nothing is more infuriating than missing a delivery, and we can ask the courier to leave the package in a safe place if you are out.

The heavier and larger log stores are delivered flat-packed, via pallet service (again with all the screws and relevant instructions inside) and we will arrange a day for the delivery of your new log store that suits you.

We can also send some of our smaller stores pre-assembled on a pallet, but do make sure that it is going to fit through any gateways or down the side of your house, and that you have someone to help you carry it into place. You might think that you are big and strong enough to move that little log store all by yourself, but due to the high quality timber used, they can be heavier than they look. The last thing we want you to do is throw your back out!

On the agreed upon day of delivery the driver will arrive and unload your pallet for you. Using his tail-lift and hand truck, he will wheel the pallet into a convenient place. The driver will not normally unpack the pallet for you but will leave it in a sensible place for you to do so at your leisure.

Here at Dorset Log Stores we have worked hard to make sure the only difficult part of ordering a garden store or log store is choosing which one will look best in your garden.

The Parcel Delivery Hut

There is nothing more infuriating and annoying than returning home on a Tuesday from work hoping to find that new and shiny "Doo-Dad" you'd bought at the weekend waiting for you. Instead what you find is a small and innocuous card explaining that because you were not home they have taken your parcel to the local post office. Now you are faced with an agonising four day wait until you can get into town at the weekend!

Built in here in Dorset from the same quality timber as our log stores, the Parcel Delivery Hut offers an aesthetically appealing answer to metal delivery bins and fits comfortably into any style of garden, offering a strong weatherproof option for your deliveries. Constructed from sturdy pressure treated redwood upon a solid framework of 38 x 38 timber, the parcel hut is as strong as you would expect it to be for safe guarding your thingy-ma-bobs. The unobtrusive design of the Parcel Delivery Hut also means that it is often overlooked as somewhere there valuable parcels would be stored, while its simple timber hues don't look out of place in front of any house.

Whats the Best Wood to Burn?

Dorset Log Stores is tucked away in a little wayward corner of the sleepy Blackmore Vale in the centre of Dorset, so you'd think that having lived here for just over a decade I'd know a bit more about the countryside than I do. Don't get me wrong here, I was born in the home counties, know the difference between a sheep and a cow and I am as green fingered as the next Alan Titmarsh, however when it comes to trees identification I find myself sadly lacking.

Luckily, the Bosses can spot a Horse Chestnut tree from a thousand paces and have been working, constructing and building with timber for over fourteen years. As such, they know a little bit more about trees than this humble office monkey. 

We have converted this great encyclopedia of knowledge into a help information page on what sort of wood is best for chopping and storing in your log store for the roaring fires in the cold winter months. 

Log Baskets

• APPLE  - Extremely hard stuff once seasoned. Apple wood burns with a gorgeous aroma and doesn't tend to spark or spit. 
• ASH -  One of the best woods for fuel producing lovely flames and great heat, even as green wood. The branches are often used as kindling. 
• BEECH - Very good firewood that produces both heat and flame. Can be known to spark and must be seasoned for a whole year.
• BIRCH - A good firewood producing a great fire. Burns quickly, even if unseasoned. The branches are often used for kindling. 
• CHERRY - Burns slowly without spitting and giving a pleasant smell, but must be seasoned well. 
• ELM - Needs a long seasoning due to its huge water content. When seasoned it burns slowly giving off a good heat. 
• HORSE CHESTNUT - Requires a long seasoning and spits a lot, however provides both a good flame and heat. 
• OAK - Excellent firewood. Burns slowly giving off plenty of heat. Best left to season for two years or can give off an acrid smell when burnt. 
• PINE - Good flame and scent but spits and leaves oily soot in the your chimney. 
• SYCAMORE - Good firewood burning well, but produces little heat. 
• WILLOW - Burns well if properly seasoned.

Trees in Mythology

Thanks to stories like Alice in Wonderland, with it's rabbit hole under a tree leading to Wonderland (a favourite of ours here at Dorset Log Stores), the Ents of Tolkien's epic Lord of the Rings, even to the contemporary Whomping Willow of Harry Potter, trees have a place in our collective conscience as places of magic and enchantment. In fact trees and woods have featured throughout myths and legends.

Olive Trees

In Ancient Greek mythology, a contest between Athena and Poseidon over naming Greece's greatest city, was won by the goddess Athena after she created and gifted them the olive tree as her gift. The olive tree was a vital export product for the city, providing food and oil, making Athens rich, so it is no surprise that this tree was woven into the very naming of their great city.

Similarly, in Greek mythology, trees were inhabited by demi-goddesses Dryads, beautiful tree nymphs who lives were linked to the their tree.

Ancient Greece even had a myth to explain why the almond tree flowered earlier than others, Phyllis missed her lover who was away at war so much that she was close to pining to death. Taking pity on her, the Goddess Athena turned her into an almond tree. Returning from the war, her lover heard what happened and kissed the almond tree in sorrow. It immediately burst into flower, even though its leaves had not started to bud and has done so ever since.

In Norse mythology, a tree is actually at the centre of the whole universe. The tree Yggdrasil is a central cosmic tree who's branches and roots extend far out into the heavens encompassing the nine known worlds of Norse mythology.

In the Jewish and Christian faith the tree plays a central role in their creation myths and as an explanation of the world itself. After Eve and Adam eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, at the behest of the wicked serpent, they are cast out of the Garden of Eden forever.

Trees of peace, such as those believed by the Iroquois Indians to be central to the founding of their confederacy, to groves of sacred trees are known to exist in Asia, India and across Africa, with penalties for those who violate them.

Trees as symbolic, ritual and mythical things stretch far beyond our recent stories, so next time you are filling your log store up ready for a cold evening, be sure to remember a story or two all about trees. 

The Little Okeford Store

Having recently moved in the last few months, my new garden consists of an area of sixteen paving slabs; covered in a table and chairs, fifteen potted plants and trees (including my much beloved Acer tree) and my mini chiminea for lazy summer evenings outside.

The smaller log store

Okeford Log Store

What is Kindling?

Kindling is just small pieces of wood that are used to start a fire as they catch easier than logs.

What is the Difference between Softwoods and Hardwoods?

Generally speaking, softwoods are coniferous trees such as pines and fir trees, while hardwood trees are deciduous trees. Softwoods are quick to grow and dry, and are more commonly used as commercial wood. The fact that it is quick to grow and dry generally makes it cheaper too. Hardwood is denser making it harder to season, although it lasts longer than softwoods.

Why buy a wood store from Dorset Log Stores?

Our log stores are designed and made here in Dorset by local craftsmen. We are an established company with a reputation for quality in construction, finish and excellent customer service that we have worked hard to acquire and work even harder to maintain.

Why do you use Pressure Treated (tanalised) Timber for your Log Stores?

Our timber is treated with Tanalith-E, a modern anti-rot and fungal pressure treatment which will keep your log store in tip top condition for many years. Untreated timber is vulnerable to rot and fungal attack, it will not last as long, and you will be left with a log store that is falling apart.

What does "Seasoned" mean?

Seasoning of wood is when you allow the cut logs to be stored and dry out for a season. Wood contains a lot of moisture, so when logs are cut they should be stored and dried, for a few months at least to give you the optimum burn when you light them.

Log Storage and Seasoning Fire Wood

No fire will burn wet wood. 

Something that several of my friends and I discovered, when on Christmas Eve we attempted to use a chimenea to have a slightly different sort of Christmas Eve dinner. Unfortunately our handmade gourmet burgers stuffed with scotch bonnet chilies and mozzarella, came out rather more smoked than cooked. It turns out the actual act of setting fire to the wood doesn't dry it out either.

The science

Hinton Log Store

When wood is burned you get two things, carbon dioxide and water. Of these it is the water that is avoidable by having stored your firewood in a log store to season and dry. Burning wet wood results in a decreased efficiency of your fire and incidentally means that burgers take an hour to slowly cook as you all stand out in the cold on a Christmas Eve. The loss of efficiency is because the fire is having to boil the water out of the wood before it can then burn effectively. As it burns away one layer of wet wood, like an onion it meets a new layer of wet wood which must once again be burned away so your fire slowly but surely loses heat.

Which is why it is so important to have somewhere to dry and season your logs ready for a fire. Dorset Log Stores are all built with a 19mm gap in between each board giving superior air flow from all sides. It is this air flow that will dry your logs out and get them ready to give you a towering inferno of warmth. When buying logs to go into your log store you should make sure that the moisture content is less than 20% and ideally 10%.

Sometimes it can take a year for wood to be properly dry and seasoned

Regardless of the quantity and quality of wood that you buy and burn, it must always be properly dried. Drying the wood in your own log store will mean you know that the wood will be burning at its most productive giving you the desired effect of a cosy living room, a roaring log burner or in the case of my friends and myself a properly cooked burger. As you’d expect we have nearly all our log stores on display here at DLS HQ, topped up with logs ready to keep us warm and dry through these long cold winters. Just a few weeks ago I had the pleasure of being “volunteered” to go out in the cold to film a short video of our lovely log stores (and collect fresh logs each time for the log burner). Putting on my scarf, coat and turning up the collar, I went out into the Dorset elements. Moving between the units that we have on display, I collected some premium dry logs into my wicker log basket from our most popular Okeford Log Store, before shuffling past a smaller Hinton Log Store (perfect for outside back doors and storing wood for the Chimenea) and finishing at the medium sized Coppice Log Store to obtain some kindling from its handy full width shelf, before scuttling back inside from the cold.

Having finished my ordeal of wind and cold, having written my first blog entry and having warmed my toes by the roaring inferno that was now the log burner (thanks to my getting more logs) I felt a short nap was well deserved. After all, is there really anything better than a nice nap in front of a blazing fire when it’s cold and rainy outside?
